Making a Move
If you are moving house, you may feel intimidated by the size of the task ahead. Especially if you have been in the same location for years, you may have accumulated a lot of stuff. While there is no way to completely eliminate the hassle of moving, there are ways that you can make the process simpler, with less hassle.
For instance, you can save a significant amount of money by packing your own possessions. On the other hand, leaving the driving to someone else may be a worthwhile investment. Hiring a moving trailer rental to haul your packed possessions allows you to save money while minimizing your moving hassle. You can also save money and hassle by planning your move well in advance of your actual moving date
Don’t Move It At All
The least expensive way to move an item is not to move it at all. Especially if you are moving long distance or overseas, you can save a significant amount of money by simply lightening your load. If possible, allow yourself enough time to go through your possessions and toss, donate or sell as much as possible. Many local charities will arrange pickups of large items or a large quantity of donated items, but you will need to allow sufficient lead time for the charity or organization to organize a truck and volunteers to retrieve your unwanted items.
Get the Right Boxes and Packing Equipment
Once you have thinned out your unwanted items, make a list of what you plan to take with you to your new location, and obtain the proper packing materials well in advance of your move date. Books and other heavy items should be placed in small boxes. Boxes for dishes should be large enough to allow for sufficient padding around each individual piece. Clothes on hangers are much easier to transport in wardrobe boxes than folded in suitcases or in conventional boxes. Don’t forget to obtain clean padding material, color coded labels, markers and plenty of tape.
Label and List Everything
Sort your items by rooms and place them in boxes that are labeled accordingly with color coded labels. Make a list of the contents of each box as you pack the box. The effort you make now to properly separate and sort your items now will translate into less hassle when unpacking. Otherwise, you face the possible scenario of unpacking every single box to find an essential item like a can opener, your passport, or your child’s favorite toy.
If you are planning to have a mover transport your items to your new location, pack a separate box of essential items, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, grooming essentials, vital paperwork and a few changes of clothing. Keep this box separate from your other boxes, and take it with you when you move. In the event that the moving truck is delayed, you will be able to get by with the basic essentials you have packed until the truck finally arrives with the remainder of your possessions.
