And above all else, with their experience, you can be confident that you are making the right decisions; but only if you are working with the right real estate agent for you. Here are some qualities to look for in a real estate agent, to ensure you end up signing on with the right one.

Personality

You would think this is obvious, right? However, it’s not. If you plan on buying or selling a house, isn’t it important that the real estate agent you choose to work with has similar qualities, schedule and even interests as you? What about experience in your area or even the type of house you are either buying or selling? The more aligned you are, the better. This way, when it comes down to it, you’ll be on the “same page” so to speak. It’s important to work with someone that you are comfortable with and it’s important to communicate openly. After all, you are entrusting your real estate agent with a very large transaction on your behalf, so you want to ensure you are 100% comfortable right from day one.

Technologically savvy

Now this is one thing that simply cannot be avoided in today’s information age. The real estate agent you choose will need to be fully aware of the ways they can use search engines, online marketing and websites in order to either help you find the perfect house, or even the perfect buyer for your property for sale. And, depending on the type of house you are either buying or selling, your real estate agent should be able to present to you an online plan for optimizing your sale, or your search, depending on your situation.

Familiarity with the local market

Not all agents are experts in all areas of real estate. Sure, they know they ins and outs of a real estate transaction, but do they really know the area you are buying in? Or selling in? Your selected real estate agent should be fully familiar with the local neighborhood in question, the subtle nuances, upcoming developments, city plans, and anything else that might be necessary for you to make an informed decision on how to sell your house, of buy one for that matter. The last thing you want is surprises at the eleventh hour that could make a real estate deal go south. And, if the real estate agent you choose not only has the qualities you are looking for from a personality perspective, but they also know your area very well, it’s a surefire way to know that you are working with the right person.

Communication skills

This is a big one! And, it’s important to set your expectations in advance. If you want phone calls over emails, be sure to tell your real estate agent. If you prefer links to potential houses, or comparative houses, to be send through email, let them know. It’s also equally important to let your real estate agent know how often you’ll like to be updated so that your never left wondering where things are in the process. If you want to talk to your real estate agent directly, instead of being called or emailed from someone else in their office, you need to tell them. Be up front, be clear on your expectations, and make sure you’re in touch often enough to ensure you are comfortable with how things are going in your house sale, or buying process.
