How to get a real estate agent?

by Sundaybell on August 28, 2012

Getting, or finding a real estate agent can be a daunting task, however, there are a number of ways to go about it.

1. Word-of-mouth referrals

Most commonly, future homebuyers or home sellers will ask their friends and family about their experiences and the individual real estate agents they have worked with.  These are considered referrals and are the #1 way real estate professionals obtain new clients. Most real estate agents will service their clients well to ensure they receive word-of-mouth referrals.

2. Open houses

Real estate agents do host open houses of the properties they are currently trying to sell on behalf of their clients in order to attract potential buyers.  This is also a prospecting tool that they use in order to meet new clients who may be thinking about moving. It’s also a great way to meet agents.  For example, if you are thinking about getting into the market and notice that an agent you might be considering is hosting an open house, it’s a great way to meet them and see how they work. This way, when you invite them to meet with you about your property, you’ll already have a sense of what they are like and if they can help you with your real estate requirements.

3. Review local advertising

In most communities, there are local newspapers that are filled with advertising from real estate agents.  You can identify local real estate agents by scouring the local papers and then having a look at their personal websites.

4. Use online resources

Websites like Sundaybell allow you to post your profiles anonymously and have real estate agents respond to you and any particular questions you might have.  It’s a great way to meet local REALTORS® and determine who might have the credentials you are looking for without the pressure of face-to-face sales tactics.

5. Do an online search

Typing key words into Google such as “real estate agent + your area” will likely pull up a list of real estate agents that have spent the time and effort marketing their businesses online.  It won’t necessarily bring up the best agents, but you will get a feel for who is investing in their real estate business and taking on initiatives to grow their client base.

There is no right or wrong way to find a real estate agent.  In most cases, it boils down to what an individual person is looking for. Having the knowledge of services and available commission rates and being able to communicate openly about them is the best approach.  As a matter of fact, most buyers and sellers will interview at least 3 real estate agents prior to making a decision on whom to work with.

Sundaybell is an online service allowing homebuyers and home sellers the opportunity of learning more about real estate and meeting and interviewing real estate agents in their area while remaining anonymous.
